A very important characteristic that black belts possess is pride. Black belts have pride in everything they say and do. They are proud of who they are and what they have accomplished, knowing that they have worked hard to achieve their goals. That is why black belts are so respected by others. Black belts walk into the dojo with their heads held high. They do so not because they think they are better than others, but because they know how hard they had to work to get where they are, and they are very proud of it. What are you proud of? You too can walk with your head held high because you are proud of yourself. You do not need to be a black belt to have pride. You simply need to work hard and make good decisions and good choices. The pride you feel about who you are and what you believe gives you strength and confidence. Being proud means that you feel good about yourself. People with pride work hard at their jobs, study hard at school and even train hard at the dojo. People who work at being the best they can be succeed; others who don t work as hard fail. You will not be proud of yourself if you make bad decisions. Some people steal because they feel that to be accepted by others they need more possessions than they have. Some people lie because they feel they need to attempt or accomplish more in order to be accepted. If you are proud of who you are, what you have, and how you behave, you do not need to lie, cheat, or steal. The best part about pride is that in order to achieve it, you have already experienced the good things in life. Black belts know how to walk away from unnecessary conflict. They know they are not walking away because they are scared, but because they have enough pride to keep out of trouble. That is the power of pride, and pride is something that cannot be taken away. People with pride have better opportunities in life because they work harder. If you are proud of whom you are, then you will work hard at being even better. That is why those with pride gain so much respect from others. People with pride are also happier because they are satisfied. Just like a black belt, you can earn respect and become happier in life by taking pride in who you are and what you do. The East Valley Kicker 2005 Martial Arts Management Network 2 March 2005 As small children, we are told by our teachers to hold hands with friends when doing such things as crossing the street or going through a parking lot. This is the beginning of our understanding of the buddy system. But what does being a buddy have to do with better health? It is the same principle& offering support and guidance, as well as companionship, to others in their quest to achieve their goals (whether the goal is better health or safety). So how can you be a buddy for better health? First, choose a partner with whom to exercise. The Martial Arts (upper case) is unique in that your training naturally lends itself to the buddy system. And this holds true not only for practicing techniques, but also for providing overall support to fellow students. Why not expand this support to include all aspects of your mutual quest for better health. Training with a buddy will enable you each to enjoy your exercise more, and will encourage both of you to exercise more frequently and/or regularly. You will learn from each other and support each other through challenges and difficulties. And this support can and should extend to all aspects of your martial arts (lower case) training and your quest for better health. For example, you can support each other at such stressful times as quitting smoking and learning to follow a healthful eating plan while attempting to lose weight. So who can be your buddy? You may choose your spouse, a family member, a close friend, or maybe even a friend who will become a closer friend by being a buddy! Better yet, your entire family can treat each other like buddies. Train as a family. Not only will you be able to assist each other in your training in and out of class, but also you will all be more focused on giving the additional health support that we all need to achieve ultimate success. HealthKick Buddy Up For Better Health Black Belt Pride Training Tip: Don t Rush Through Warm Ups! Training in the martial arts can be very exciting. In fact, many times we may feel the urge to rush through warm-ups in order to get to the basics of kicking and punching. However, warm ups are critical to our overall success as martial arts practitioners and athletes. The most important reason to properly warm-up before training is to prevent injury. Many minor, but nagging, injuries are caused by our failure to prepare our bodies for the action ahead. This is most detrimental to our training because injuries keep us from working out. There is nothing more frustrating then waiting for injuries to heal to get back to training. Once you have properly warmed-up, you can look forward to better kicks and punches because your muscles respond better in a heated state. Additionally, warmed muscles can be stretched which increases muscle flexibility, improving techniques dramatically. Warming up at home before practicing is equally important as warming up before class. In fact, your rule of thumb should be to warm-up before undergoing any demanding muscle activities. Remember, a good martial artist can demonstrate patience. Don t rush through your warm-ups. Prepare your muscles for the exciting training ahead. The pride you feel about who you are and what you believe gives you strength and confidence.
